VHS stands for Video Home System, these tapes began for home use in around 1976 and only started to decline in the late 1990’s when DVD’s came on to the market. Betamax was developed by Sony and was released in Japan on May 10, 1975, and appeared in stores in early November 1975. Played back on TV in VCR’s (Video Cassette Recorders) The resulted in a very bulky camera and sometimes a separate tape deck was used.
Another less popular Video Camera tape was used in the Video 8 and Hi8 Cameras. These became available in 1985. This was a much smaller camera though. These tapes could only be played back on the camera itself.
To try to become more compact the VHS-C tapes quickly became very popular in 1982 and even more compact was the VHS Mini DV (Digital Video) tapes. The DV tapes became available in 1995. The VHS-C tapes were played back using a Cassette Adapter where the smaller tapes were inserted in to it then played back on a VCR.
When transferring any type of tapes I only use the best equipment and software. Your output DVD’s or Files are edited so that you don’t have any TV / Black / Static or unused tape starts or ends to your movies. I do not copy any TV programs that may be on your tapes. You can have your movies put to DVD, or USB Hard drives. DVD’s have a separate menu for each tape on the DVD, with your title of the tape. If done as a file (generally Mp4) each tape is saved as a separate file titled as the tape title. DVD covers have titles and menus and DVD’s are printed on for your convenience.
